Tuesday of 10th Week of OT--Saint Barnabas, Apostle

I Am Reminded to Be the Salt of the Earth and the Light of the World on My Anniversary to the priesthood

On this day of eight years ago, under his imposition of hands to impark the Holy Spirit, his Excellency, The Most Reverend William Michael Mulvey, Bishop of Corpus Christi welcomed me to the priesthood of Jesus Christ at Corpus Christi Cathedral. Being ordained on the feast of Saint Barnabas, the Apostle, I am reminded the life of the Saint and called to follow his apostolic life in my priestly life and ministry.

We learn from the book of Acts of the Apostles, Barnabas’ original name was Joseph, born in Cyprus. He sold his piece of property and gave the proceeds to the Apostles, who gave him the name Barnabas means “the son of encouragement.” Since Barnabas was a good man, described in today’s first reading from the book of Acts, he was also filled with the Holy Spirit and faith. He brought Saul to the Apostles in Jerusalem. Later, both Barnabas and Saul went to Jerusalem. After a strong disagreement, they separated. Barnabas took with him John also called Mark, and Paul chose Silas and departed after being commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord.

The Gospel was chosen for this feast of the Apostle Barnabas was written under the pen of Saint Matthew calling his disciples to be “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.” How do they become the salt of the earth and the light of the world? As the apostles of Christ, they are called to bring healing for the sick, to expel the demon, to have faith in the Lord without worry too much of what to bring and what to eat on their journey, and to bring peace to where they do ministry.

May I constantly remind to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world in my priestly life and ministry, and may Saint Barnabas intercede for me to have the heart of encouragement to follow his footsteps in my priestly ministry. With gratitude and thankful to the Almighty God who continues to lead me in my priestly life, I entrust the care on his Mother Mary to continue to watch over me and to teach me her word of Fiat.
