Monday of 2nd Week of Easter A

Baptism With Water and Spirit

From now until the rest of Easter Season, the Gospel is chosen from the writing of Saint John. Beginning of the teaching of Saint John during this Easter is the Sacrament of Baptism. What is the Sacrament of Baptism? Have we all need to go through Baptism?

“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua),4 and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word."” (CCC 1213). Baptism then is the gateway to the life in Spirit and the door to all other Sacraments in the Catholic Church. Through Baptism, we are free from our original sin and to be adopted sons and daughters of God and brothers and sisters of Christ.

The Baptism will not be completed if there is missing one of the two elements: Water which accompanied with the Trinitarian formula. The one who administers the Sacrament while pouring the Holy Water on the head of a candidate saying “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Missing one of these two elements, Baptism will be invalid. The ordinary minister is the ordained minister either deacon, priest, or bishop. In the danger of death, anybody can baptize anybody as long as he or she use that two elements of Baptism.

Have we all need to go through Baptism? In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, and to each and every one of us that “Unless one is born of water and Spirit he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.” Therefore, Baptism seems to be necessary to inherit the Kingdom of God. Those who want to inherit the Kingdom of God, then they need to go through Baptism. The decision is yours.
