Sign of Repentance

Today’s Gospel is a continuation of the story of a mute man possessed by demons that after Jesus expelled the demons out of him, people began to be divided. Majority was amazed, but some asked for a sign. Others said that he used the power of the Beelzebul, the prince of demons, to drive out demons. In today’s Gospel, Jesus responded to the group asking for a sign saying, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah.” Who is Jonah? What happens to him that Jesus reminded the people here?

Jonah was one of the prophets that God chose to preach to the people of Nineveh, but he ran away from it. In his running, he was swallowed into the belly of a big fish for three days and three nights. After he was released from the big fish, he went to preach to the Ninevites, and they repented.

The sign of Jonah in the belly of the fish is the sign of repentance, what is the sign of repentance for you and I? The sign of repentance of the Nineveh is a sign of turning back to God, what is the sign of repentance for you and I? Have you and I ever needed repentance?
