Monday of 17th Week of OT C--Memorial of Saint Martha

What is Faith?

Today, the Church celebrates the feast of Saint Martha. Study Scriptures, we know that Martha has a sister by the name Mary and a brother by the name Lazarus. Martha is apparently the head of the household of a family that both parents might be deceased in the Middle East culture at that time. Both Martha and Mary are adults and might have spouses and children all living together in the same house. Martha is busy taking care of many things in the house.

In today’s Gospel, taken from the Gospel of Saint John, the moment that she heard the message that the Lord Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. Why did she go to meet him? Perhaps, she believed that Jesus could save her brother Lazarus. This was exactly she said to Jesus when she met him saying, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” A woman with a strong faith in the Lord Jesus, even though her brother was already dead. What a marvelous faith she had in the Lord Jesus. This confirmed what she responded to the Lord Jesus saying, “I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, [and] the one who is coming into the world.”

A friend came and told his friend, who was drinking and having fun with his friends in a bar, that his trailer was flushed and moved. The friend replied that it was impossible because he still had the key of the trailer in his pocket. What we possessed might not secure anything we had.

Martha recognized that Jesus was everything and anything. This was exactly she ran to meet him when she heard that he was in town. Her deep faith touched Jesus’ heart that he raised her brother Lazarus back to life again.

How is our faith in the Lord Jesus? Has Jesus been anything and everything for us on our spiritual journey here on earth? Has he ever disappointed you when you asked and never received what you asked of him? Would you continue to ask him even though you haven’t or never received what you asked of him? If he hasn’t given you what you asked for, would you turn to ask someone else? What is faith for you?
