Friday of 5th Week of Lent A

Good Works Lead to Glory

Yesterday’s Gospel, Jesus tried to help the Jews understand who he is by telling them that “Before Abraham came to be, I AM.” Today’s Gospel, they got mad and wanted to stone him, so he said, “I have shown you many good works from my Father. For which of these are you trying to stone me?” What good works that Jesus had done that the Jews tried to stone him? Why didn’t they recognize his works were good works? What’s wrong?

One of the companies that I used to work for before I studied for priest, my team leader always watched me at every move I made at work. I was an analysis technician working for an electronic company. I always came to work early and left at the hour. I did my works and performed my duties like any other technicians, but for some reasons, my team leader always watched me at every move. She even followed me all the way to the door of the bathroom. I asked her why, but she just shrugged her shoulders and responded nothing.

Unlike this team leader, the Jews, reported in today’s Gospel, didn’t stone Jesus for his good works, but they stoned him because he blasphemy. He made himself equal to God. He made them jealous what he could do and they could not.

The jealousy story is not a story of more than two thousand years ago, but it is also our story. Out of jealousy that my team leader watched me at every move I made, even though I didn’t do anything wrong. Have you ever experienced someone getting jealous with you of what you have or who you are that they don’t have? What would you do when someone gets jealous with you of who you are and what you have? Would you be able to forgive them when they accused you wrongly or made your life miserable? Why did Jesus, Son of God and God himself, die on the Cross even though they accused him wrongly? Crucified him on the Cross because of jealousy? Was the death on the Cross to show the weakness of God or to lead us to glory with him on our last day?
