Friday of 16th Week of Ordinary Time Cycle C--Memorial of Saint Joachim and Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary

How Would One Read and Hear the Word of God?

Today, the Church remembers Saints Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the grandparents of the Lord Jesus Christ. We don’t know much about Joachim and Anne except that they are the parents of Mary. We know this fact through Protoevangelium Jacobi (The Gospel of James) written in 170 AD. This Gospel is not part of the Bible, but this document gives an insight into the life of Mary and her parents.

Joachim was a prominent and respected man, however, he had no children. He viewed this as a punishment from God. In answer to his prayer, Anne, his wife, was conceived and gave birth to Mary who was conceived without sin. Mary remained sinless, ever-virgin, and was Theotokos (the Mother of God).

The Gospel, the Church arranges to celebrate the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, reminds us what Jesus said to his disciples saying, “Blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear.” Would there be other people around the disciples at the time that Jesus said this? Perhaps, they all had eyes and ears just like his disciples, but how comes he only said this to his disciples? We too all have eyes and ears, perhaps, these eyes can see and these ears can hear. What does he mean “Blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear”?

They had eyes to see, but they only wanted to see what they wanted to see. They had ears to hear, and they only wanted to hear what they wanted to hear. They all saw the Lord Jesus with their eyes and all heard him with their ears, but they all rejected him because of what they saw and heard were not what they wanted to see and to hear except his disciples.

We read Scripture and hear the Scripture at least when we come to Mass, but have you and I see the Lord and hear the Lord every time we engage into reading and listening to the Word of God? How would we see and hear God in our lives?

Perhaps, we need to read and to hear the Word of God such as:

  1. See the Word of God like Tylenol or Advil that when we have a headache or pain and fever, using these drugs help to reduce and to relieve the pain and the hurt.
  2. See the Word of God like dark chocolate when we want to have a better health, even though it has a bitter taste, but it helps to improve our health in many ways such as to lower blood sugar, or any Avocado, spinach, lettuce and broccoli as well.
  3. See the Word of God like Tuna and salmon when we want to prevent bad health such as high blood pressure, it tastes delicious (if you know how to cook) and it incredible helps to lower blood pressure. Also, cereal, milk, eggs, banana, and beet as well.

How would you read and hear the Word of God in your life? Decision is yours.
